Empowering poor women to engage effectively in governance
To celebrate International Women’s Day 2017, Oxfam's Regional Gender Justice Programme launched Manarat(Lighthouse), a digital comic campaign to tell the stories of Pioneer Women from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region who have contributed to their societies or excelled in their fields.
The campaign aimed at celebrating and paying tribute to a sample of MENA pioneer women who have contributed to the progress and advancement of their societies. The featured women were selected amongst hundreds of nominees that were crowd-sourced online. The selected profiles vary from community mobiliser, political activist, athlete, artist, medical doctor, adventurist, and sexual and reproductive health rights campaigner. They come from 8 countries including Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen, Egypt, Mauritania, Syria, Palestine, and Tunis.
The comic stories were drawn by a Lebanese Feminist Comic Artist and Award winner, Lena Merhej. Each week, we released one comic story to highlight the achievements of other women and young women in MENA region, who have been unsung and sidelined.
